It is as though the all and sundry in the film world were waiting for the official announcement for the reopening of the Mumbai theatres to be out because the day the news was in the open, many producers selected dates on which they wanted to release their films this year.
However, things are pretty different with Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Jayantilal Gada, who are the makers of the Alia Bhatt starrer Gangubai Kathiawadi. Well, it is one of the most talked about films that was slated to release this year. However, the second wave of lockdown and the consequent closure of the cinema halls once again led to the canning of the film, albeit temporarily. Bollywood Hungama reported that when the date of reopening of theatres in Maharashtra was announced, the producer of the film Jayantilal Gada met up with the director of the film Sanjay Leela Bhansali to zero in on a probable date for the release of the film this year. However, it was Bhansali who asked Jayantilal Gada to hold on to his horses as according to him this year was not okay for the film to be released because many films are already in line waiting to hit the screens this year and resultantly, Gangubai Kathiawadi would end up being just any other film in the clutter. This is why Bhansali asked Gada to wait till next year.
Bollywood Hungama quoted a source close to Bhansali as saying, “Too many release dates were announced for this year within 24 hours of the announcement. Sanjay Bhansali feels it is premature to schedule Gangubai Kathiawadi in 2021. He wanted to push it for when until the pandemic situation is clearer. Also, Sanjay feels that until theatres are allowed to run to 100 percent capacity (contrary to the 50 percent occupancy allowed at the moment) audiences won’t feel confident enough to return to movie theatres. By January, theatres should be running to full capacity.”
The report further states that film is slated to release on 6th January, 2022.
