Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 Review: Sloppy, imbalanced writing mars the film’s horror-comic feel, TABU IS PHENOMENAL

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 is a sequel to the Priyadarshan directorial Bhool Bhulaiyaa that had Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan and Shiney Ahuja in the lead roles. Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 stars Tabu, Kartik Aaryan, Kiara Advani in the lead roles. Kartik plays Ruhaan, a carefree lad who meets Kiara’s Reet by chance during a trip and falls in love almost instantly. Reet hails from a Thakur gharana in Rajasthan which has a sordid past. By a stroke of luck Ruhaan succeeds in persuading Ruhi to stay over with him for a party and not board the bus they had tickets for to take them home and guess what … The bus crashes leaving all the passengers in it dead. Reet and Ruhaan are ecstatic when they realise they have survived a potential catastrophe. That’s when Reet decides to take Ruhaan with him and thereafter starts the comedy of lies! To cover up one lie of Reet’s death, the couple has to keep lying to her family. Gradually, Ruhaan comes to know about a vengeful spirit that is kept behind closed doors Manjulika player by none other than Tabu. What happens thereafter will be revealed to you if you watch the film.

It seems director Anees Bazmee got a little too carried away with the cast, Kartik was given a freeway to act the way he wanted and the dialogue delivery looked forced and copied from the director himself or he directed him only on the dialogue delivery. Another point worth noting is that he gave a meaty role to Tabu because of what she has done in the film, no one else could have done it, thankfully Kiara was put on the back burner for the scenes Tabu did. That surely was a big plus.

Talking about the performances, Kartik Aaryan tries to be funny all throughout. The dialogues mouthed by him sound genuine though but sometimes the tinge of laughter in the midst of the comic scenes fail to hold much water. The worst part is, Kartik looked like the mirror image of director Anees Bazmee, it seemed as though he had directed him even how to deliver the dialogues or he perhaps copied him too much!

At times it becomes too much. In one scene when Manjulika’s spirit possesses Kartik’s Ruhaan, he bursts out into a classical dance and trust me, that is funnier than most of the film.

Kiara doesn’t have much screen time in the film, in fact for the most part she keeps hiding in the film in her own house!!

Tabu is the lady who takes the cake and leaves the crumbs for the rest. She is just too good as always. The laughter, the tears, the anger, the emotions, she is just too good. In fact 2 stars out of the 2.5 stars to the film belong to her.

The writing by Akash Kauahik and Farhad Samji could have been much better. Kartik’s character has neither been given any background nor any purpose. No one knows where he is coming from. The other characters in the film don’t have that issue though. All in all, merging the comic aspects in the film with the very scarce chilling moments isn’t good enough for a horror comedy. It had to be a little more exciting.

At the end of the day, it is a nice family entertainer and can be watched albeit the thinking caps are left outside the cinema hall.

Kiara Advani Feels “You Just Can’t Compare” What Male Co-Stars Get To Do In Films, Says “That’s How Scripts Are Written”

Kiara Advani is one of the most promising female actors in the Hindi film industry. The actress will next be seen in Anees Bazmee’s directorial Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 which also stars Kartik Aaryan and Rajpal Yadav in lead roles. In an interview with the PTI, Advani stated that in comedies, the female actors, unfortunately, don’t get to do what the male actors do. In fact in most films women are just used as props to accentuate the male attributes and persona on the big screen. However, there are some films like Queen, and now the most recent Dhaakad where women-centric roles dominate the screen.

“It’s very rare that a female protagonist adds a punch. I am still craving to do that. I’m part of these films, they all have had an interesting arc to the characters. But if I’ve to compare it to what your male protagonist is doing (in the film), then you just can’t compare,” Kiara told PTI. Kiara who rose to prominence after her role in the film Kabir Singh, said that women don’t really get meaty roles in comedy films also because “that’s how the scripts are written, It definitely does disappoint. Maybe now’s the time you start speaking up and telling your director that you want more. Maybe now I will start doing that going forward.”

Bhool Bhulaiyaa frontlined by actor Kartik Aaryan is a remake of the Akshay Kumar starrer film of the same name and it starred Vidya Balan in the lead, the film was directed by Priyadarshan. Kiara feels that comedy is a very difficult genre and it doesn’t come naturally to everyone and she also thinks that Akshay and Diljit are very organic when it comes to comic relief. “Comedy is an extremely tough genre but I don’t think it gets enough credit. It doesn’t come naturally to many, some people are just gifted. Comedy with Diljit and Akshay is just so organic. They get that timing correct, which is crucial. That experience made me learn a lot because it was the first time I was doing it. Even in ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’, everyone was fantastic and gifted and on top of that, when you are being directed by Anees sir, whose hold on comedy is so strong, you are in safe hands.”

Kiara feels it is fair that people will definitely compare the two films because it is a part of a franchisee but their roles are different, “The film takes the franchise forward, with an entirely new script. Certain elements have been retained from the first part, just to keep the nostalgic value alive. There were no apprehensions about stepping into this world, despite being aware that it’s not a forgotten film. What helped me was that it had a new voice. People will compare the two films, and that’s fair because it’s a franchise, but not the characters because we are not playing the same parts.”

His sudden ouster from the Karan Johar film Dostana was attributed to his over-confidence and the amount of money he was asking to be part of the film. And when the news of his ouster from the Johar camp reached the public, there was a huge outcry and people started pointing fingers at Karan Johar for promoting Nepotism. After a long time, Kartik is finally promoting his film Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and it was during these promotions that he was asked about this incident and his exit from Dostana 2. Well,m it was during an interaction with Indian Express that he was asked this question to whichhe stated that he just focusses on his work and nothing else, “I just focus on my work. That’s all I would like to say on this. Look at my (film) line-up (right now).”

He further stated that whatever is being said about lobbies being against him are just plain rumours, “What happens, at times, is people make ‘baat ka batangad’ (make mountain out of a molehill). There is nothing more to it. No one has so much time (to think so much). Everybody just wants to work, do good work. Other than that, things are just rumours.”

Well, whether Kartik is saying the truth or not cannot be said at this juncture. After all, he also has to save his career from the bigwigs of the industry and at the end of the day, it is the Johars and the Khans who he will ultimately ask for quality work. As of now, for sure he is steering clear from making any negative comments on the biggies of Bollywood and on the contrary he is indirectly blaming his fans for being over-protective towards him. Now, only time will tell whether this move will prove to be of any benefit to him or no in the long run.
