WHO Director-General’s Message on Successful Hantavirus Response in Tenerife

Greetings from Geneva. I am Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), and I would like to share a follow-up on the recent hantavirus response in Tenerife.

Our coordinated efforts in Tenerife have concluded successfully. Last Monday, I observed the departure of the MV Hondius passengers from Granadilla de Abona port. They are now safely traveling back to their home countries, monitored by public health professionals. Throughout this operation, the professionalism of health workers and the precise coordination by Spanish officials were commendable.

Over 120 individuals from 23 countries have disembarked and are being cared for as they make their journeys home. They arrived amid uncertainty but left with the dignity of receiving care from strangers in your community, exemplifying global solidarity in action. The risk assessments were accurate, protocols were effective, and our collective efforts demonstrated the power of science and cooperation.

This operation in Tenerife was more than just a logistical achievement. It showcased moral courage and the island’s commitment to treating everyone as human beings, without turning them away.

Leadership and Community Efforts

The Spanish government, under Prime Minister Sánchez, fulfilled its international obligations and exceeded them with compassion and efficiency. Ministers Mónica García, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, and Ángel Víctor Torres demonstrated exceptional leadership. The port authorities managed a complex operation flawlessly, and the health teams worked diligently, driven by a sense of duty and humanity.

To Captain Jan Dobrogowski and the crew of the MV Hondius: your dedication during challenging times will be remembered.

To the people of Tenerife, your gracious acceptance and support during this crisis have been recognized globally. Your actions serve as a powerful example of how humanity can respond positively in times of crisis.

Tragically, three individuals related to the hantavirus outbreak have passed away, with two deaths occurring on the ship and one in South Africa. Our thoughts are with their families during this difficult time.

Additionally, we mourn the loss of a Guardia Civil member who died of a heart attack while serving during this operation. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, and the entire Guardia Civil.

A Message of Gratitude

The essence of our success is rooted in solidarity, as demonstrated by Tenerife. I felt this personally during a brief walk through your beautiful city, where I experienced the warmth of your people.

I hope to return to Tenerife under different circumstances, perhaps for a WHO conference or a family vacation, to appreciate the island leisurely.

On behalf of the World Health Organization, the passengers now safely home, and the many families worldwide who watched with hope, I sincerely thank you for your tremendous efforts.

Our mission is not complete until every passenger and crew member has been safely reunited with their families.

With profound respect and gratitude,

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
Director-General, World Health Organization
